Material selection – natural product ingredients
For the creation of our collections we use many and various product ingredients from nature. Of course we make sure that during all extraction processes and other manufacturing steps the right measures are always taken to prevent harm to the environment as much as possible.

Material selection - wood
We pay a lot of attention to the wood products in our collection and for their selection we not only consider quality and unicity, we also include origins and sustainability of our materials in our choices.

Dijk Natural Collections is FSC® certified (FSC-C162248). This means that we are allowed to include and sell FSC® products in our collections. We try to increase the share of FSC® products annually, with the ambition to have 75% of all our wood types FSC® certified in the long term. Ask about our FSC®-certified products.

As to the other wood, we ensure that all wood imported by us has been legally cut. The wood products we purchase from Indonesia, for instance, is provided with a so-called SVLK certificate. Furthermore, we use roots from FSC certified forests and roots from other legally managed areas.

Part of our collection, the hand-made products from the roots of Indonesian FSC teak trees, are not certified at the moment, because they do not fall under FSC. There is a good reason for this, though: the FSC tree is cut without the roots and local communities earn a living by digging these roots out of the ground. If we want the roots certified, they must be removed by FSC certified staff. This would mean that local communities are excluded. As we do not want to mingle in well-functioning and honest local processes, we are OK with the fact that this part of our collection is not FSC certified at the moment as a result of this.

Material selection - recycled glass
Part of our collection consists of glass products. Many of these glass products are produced in Asia and purchased there. Since 2019 we have purchased recycled glass in addition to these glass products. At the moment, 25% of our glass collection is made of recycled glass from Europe.

By choosing recycled glass from Europe we contribute to the re-use of materials that would otherwise be considered waste, and help reduce the demand for new materials. We also shorten the distance that our materials and products have to cover. This is not only a good thing in terms of lower transport cost, but also limits CO2 emission.

Material selection – Vintage
Part of our collection consists of vintage products. These products, too, have been selected with care in the country of origin, and consist (partly) of formerly used materials. As soon as our design team has added the final touches to the vintage items together with the supplier, they are given a new life through our collection. In our vintage collection you will find items such as decorative brick moulds, dishes, tables, bar tables and much more.

We are not only convinced that the vintage items reinforce our collection, these choices and reuse of materials also reduce the demand for (and for man and environment costly production of) new materials.
